Air conditioners are super handy in hot weather. They are cooling systems that serve as an air humidifier and air filter to provide a clean and safe environment.

There are different types of AC units – Window AC conditioner unit, Portable AC, Central air, swamp cooler unit, geothermal AC, HVAC package unit, and the ductless mini-split AC.

Like all machines, air conditioners are also prone to breakdowns, and this might beg the question, should you repair or replace them? Before we answer that, let’s talk about the most common problem that your air conditioner may run into and the cause. For further resources about AC repair, please visit website.

Why is my air conditioner running but not cooling the house?

According to the carrier, this could mean a range of problems from a blocked condenser unit, clogged air filter to a bit of air conditioner.

    Air filter may be clogged

The first thing you should do if your air conditioner is running all the time but not chilling is to check the air filter. When the filter in your air conditioner becomes clogged, it inhibits airflow into your home. It can obstruct the operation of your air conditioner and prevent extra moisture from being removed from the air.

Your system can’t efficiently remove humidity if there isn’t enough air flowing over the coils. Your system starts to run continuously, making your home feel warmer.

    Air duct leaks

Cool, conditioned air passes through a system of ducts before reaching your home’s rooms.

Air ducts can become leaky or loose insulation over time. It can cause air leaks, allowing cool air to leave and making it harder for your home to reach your desired temperature.

Schedule an inspection with your local HVAC specialist if your home’s air ducts are older.

    Condenser unit is blocked

An outdoor condenser unit is undoubtedly part of your central air conditioning system. The condenser unit’s exterior contains an extensive, coil-like structure that wraps most of the way around the unit. The coil is made up of a succession of thin metal “fins” that are very closely spaced. As a result, your air conditioner may be running but not lowering temperatures indoors.

How much does it typically cost to repair an air conditioner?

An air conditioner repair typically costs $336, according to HomeAdvisor. The typical price range is $163-$520, with the highest end of repairs reaching $1100. It can also change depending on the repair type. Replacing a house air compressor, for example, might cost anywhere from $1350 to $1800, while replacing an evaporator coil can cost anywhere from $650 to $1200. AC service cost is between $75 to $200 for simple maintenance. Contracts for extended service range from $150 to $500.

AC repair prices by repair type

If your AC isn’t that old, it is better to consider repairing the system rather than replacing parts, as replacements can be pretty expensive. Contact an HVAC professional if you notice a problem with your air conditioner. The expert will visit your home to analyze the problem and provide you with a cost estimate for the repair. Let’s look at some of the problems that can arise and the price for getting them repaired.

    Repairing air ducts

Air duct repairs might cost anything from $500 to $1,200. The homeowner will discover obvious evidence that duct repair is required. The room will be noticeably warmer than the rest of the house. You may notice a reduction in airflow due to clogged vents or filters. An HVAC system’s ducts can be repaired in various ways by a professional. The ducts, for example, may need to be reinsulated. It’s also possible that a leak needs to be fixed to increase airflow. The age of the system or bugs in the ducts could be to blame for these problems.

    Clogged AC drain

A clogged AC drain will cost $100 and $150 to repair. Mold and mildew, odors, and humidity are all caused by blockages in your home. You may notice active drips or standing water in the vicinity of the unit. As a result of the clog, there may also be cycling issues.

    Repairing AC blower

Repairing an air conditioner blower will most likely cost between $150 and $200. This motor moves the fan blades inside the unit, keeping the house cool. The air conditioner blower is essential because it pushes cool air out while reducing hot air. You may notice changes in your home’s rooms, such as higher temperatures. Your system may also be running continuously without going through the proper cycling. If the blower malfunctions, the air conditioning system may not come on at all.

    AC coil repair

A professional will charge between $200 and $475 to repair air conditioning coils. When air conditioning coils freeze, they can cause problems. Most units have two types of coils: an evaporator coil and a condenser coil. A refrigerant is used in the evaporator type. If the airflow around these coils is not warm enough, they can freeze and cease functioning. A professional may be required to repair condenser coils. They can cause performance problems if they are dirty. The problem is solved by cleaning and maintenance.

    Clogged air filter

Your system will overwork if your air filter is clogged and, in extreme cases, burn out. Customers should budget $75 to $195 for a clogged air filter because the contractor will charge a minimum service charge to clean or replace the air filter. Airflow through the vents is reduced when air filters become clogged.

Is it worth repairing the air conditioner?

It’s not always straightforward to determine whether your air conditioner should be repaired or replaced. When faced with whether it is worth repairing your air conditioner, I would say this depends on how old your air conditioner is.

How long does an air conditioner last? A typical AC has a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. Unless the problem is minor, repairing an eight-year-old or older air conditioner may not be worth the investment. It could be a clogged condenser coil or a worn fan belt.

Should I replace my 25-year-old AC?

As air conditioners generally have a lifespan of 15 years, according to EnergyStar, your air conditioning unit should be changed every 10 to 15 years. Repairing a 25-year-old AC wouldn’t be such a good idea. It is more advantageous to get a replacement. As a rule, if your AC is not too old, opt for a repair instead of replacing it.
