Someone has rightly said that “Your home is a place where you are loved, can relax, and best of all, feel safe.” And they can’t be more right about it.

After having a long hard day, it is your home you want to come back to. This is because you brush off all your stress and worries as soon as you cross the threshold.

But what if you are not coming back to a safe home? Data shows that household accidents are responsible for claiming 18,000 lives each year.

    Feel the chills?

You need to know that creating a safe space where you and your family can live and thrive has to be on your priority list. And this can be done by analyzing and preventing potential health hazards around the home.

List of common household hazards to watch for

To ease things for you here, we have listed some common household hazards you need to watch out for. Read carefully as they will help you and your family live in a “home safe home.”

    Fire hazards

Did you know those fire accidents are again one of the major reasons why people make emergency calls? Not to mention, it is also held responsible for claiming more than 3,000 American lives.

Gas leaks and unattended electrical appliances are some of the prominent causes of household fire accidents.

The devastating burns from such household fire accidents can lead to life-long scars, damage your property and belongings, and hurt your loved ones. And you wouldn’t want that. Right?

In order to prevent that, make sure you have smoke detectors properly installed in your kitchen, bedrooms, and basements.

If you suspect a gas leak, make sure you contact the industry professionals right away. They will help in tracking down a gas leak in your home and prevent potential fire accidents.

You should also get your home’s electrical wiring tested by qualified professionals each year.

    Falls

You’ll be surprised to know that falls are one of the major causes of death when it comes to household accidents. Yes, you read that right.

In fact, it can also lead to broken bones and some serious health concerns, especially if the victims are seniors. The repercussions of falls can lead to long-term physical and mobility issues.

In order to prevent that, it would be best to install safety gates, both on the top and bottom of all your staircases. You would also need to ensure that the staircase is well-lit and has reliable handrails to prevent the chances of falls.

Apart from this, make sure that your bathroom floor is fully carpeted as it is one of the most susceptible areas when it comes to falls.

    Poisoning

In the past few years, the US emergency departments have been receiving calls related to poisoning.

Curious young kids are often affected by such fatal accidents. To avoid this, make sure you have locked all your cleaning supplies and harmful substances in cabinets that are way out of your children’s reach.

You can also consider investing in child-proof locks for lower cabinets so that those little hands can’t reach places where they are not supposed to be.

    To sum it all up

You need to realize the fact that household safety is a broad concept, and implementation might not be as easy as it seems. But watching out for the common household hazards mentioned above can make things a bit easier for you.
